Printing black-and-white photos on a digital printer is more difficult than printing color. A reference grade monitor is a very good match to a color print, and I can make a great first print most of the time.
Black-and-white is more difficult. Highlights and shadows do not translate as well from screen to print. What looks “perfect” on screen may look awful when you print. I learned that the hard way working with Chip Hooper using an uncalibrated scanner, printer, and monitor to match his darkroom prints in 1998. But even with modern technology, it is still a challenge every time I print black-and-white.
