Overview:

Great prints don’t happen by accident. They are a result of a considered process, from capture to careful editing, processing, file preparation and printing. In this three day intensive workshop, professional photographer Jerry Dodrill and master print maker Rich Seiling will share the techniques and processes they have used to create museum exhibitions and gallery shows for the past twenty five years, while helping you to elevate the expressiveness of your own photographs.

This in-person, hands-on class is primarily focused on image processing and printing, with opportunities for field work on the spectacular Sonoma Coast, just minutes away. Working out of Jerry’s beautiful fine art gallery in the historic town of Bodega, you will quickly elevate your craft through a mix of presentations, demonstration, lab work and critique. Working on your own photographs under the experienced eye of two top professionals in the industry, you’ll learn to refine your editing, decision making and problem solving skills to expand and fulfill your creative vision, and leave with beautiful fine art prints.

Areas of focus:

  • Refine editing, image selection and processing techniques

  • Lightroom and Photoshop strategy and creative workflow

  • How to apply sharpening and prepare files for printing

  • Understanding color management and output profiles

  • Achieving fine art quality at large and small sizes

  • Learn about different types of digital printing technologies and options

  • Proofing and printing on our in-house Epson printers

Expect to make ten to twenty 8.5x11 proof prints as you refine your photo and processing skills, culminating in a final 13x19 print.

About the instructors:

Rich and Jerry bring a wealth of experience and historical perspective to this class and will guide you through their methodologies of processing, proofing and refinement that is needed to produce a fine art quality print.

A pioneer of digital printmaking, Rich continues to push the art forward to new heights. His fine art printing studio, West Coast Imaging, helped photographers like Frans Lanting and Galen Rowell transition from analog to digital printing, and produced numerous museum exhibits and gallery shows. His prints are known for meeting and exceeding the rigorous expectations of experienced photographers and museum curators alike.

Jerry started his photography career at Galen and Barbara Rowell’s Mountain Light Gallery in the late 1990s. He assisted Galen on many assignments, managing the workshop program and gallery operations before starting his own successful photography business in 2000. Jerry’s work has been published globally by major magazines and clients like Apple, National Geographic, Smithsonian, Outside, Alpinist, and Vanity Fair, and conservation organizations like The Nature Conservancy, International League of Conservation Photographers, The Sierra Club, The Mono Lake Committee, and Sonoma Land Trust. He is an acclaimed mountain climber and guides photography expeditions and workshops to remote corners of the world. His fine art gallery is located in Northern California near the Sonoma Coast.

History:

Jerry and Rich first met in Yosemite in 1997 when Rich was working at the Ansel Adams Gallery and Jerry was still working with Mountain Light in Emeryville. It was the beginning of the digital revolution and while the two would build the foundations of their careers upon traditions of an analog darkroom, they would evolve at the cutting edge of a new age of photography.

For this class you are not expected to be an expert at printing or processing. It will help to be comfortable working in either Lightroom or Photoshop, as the class will use both applications for demos. There are no prerequisites for this session, but Rich’s online editing classes “Lightroom Reimagined” and “How to Think Like a Master - Editing/Processing Class” or his book “Expert Photo Processing” are recommended to help you prepare for the class
